Gold And Silver Price Fluctuation

Why does the cost of my gold-plated and silver-plated parts change from week to week?

Gold and silver are commodities that are actively traded on the world markets. As such, they are subject to the market forces of supply and demand. This causes the price to change over time. Typically, in times of international insecurity (i.e. wars, changes of governments in world powers) the prices of gold and silver will increase as people purchase gold and silver to use as a trading medium in lieu of paper currency. Additionally, the price of gold and silver paid by industry is higher than the published bullion rate. This is because users of the metals must pay a fabrication and distribution charge, which is added to the bullion price.

As the prices change, this is reflected in the price of the article which consumes the metal. This is typically changed on a weekly basis (daily in times of rapid change), and the base price of the gold and silver is printed on the bottom of the invoice.  Artistic Plating bases gold and silver invoicing on the Engelhard Fabricated indexes which can be found at the following link to the Wall Street Journal commodities page: http://online.wsj.com

What is the gold (silver) adder and how does it affect the price to plate my gold (silver) part?

All precious metal parts quoted by Artistic Plating are based upon the current Engelhard Fabricated metal pricing on the day of quote (see above link).  Artistic does not play “games” with gold pricing by quoting parts at a market gold below the current fair market price (beware as brand-x platers have been known to do that!).

The specific market gold value is listed at the bottom of the quote for reference.  Along with this information the gold or silver adder is provided.  The adder is the amount that the price to plate the part will increase or decrease for every $0.25 change in market silver or $5.00 change in market gold.

Example 1:  Gold Increases

Part 123 is quoted at $1.00/Ea with gold at $900.00/toz and a $0.01 adder.  If gold increases to $950.00/toz the cost to process the part will be the quoted price plus 10 adders (there are 10, $5.00 increments or gold adders between $900 and $950).  Thus the cost to process the part will be $1.00 + 10 * $0.01 = $1.10 at $950.00 gold.

Example 2:  Gold Decreases

Part 123 is quoted at $1.00/Ea with gold at $900.00/toz and a $0.01 adder.  If gold decreases to $875.00/toz the cost to process the part will be the quoted price minus five adders (there are 5, $5.00 increments or gold adders between $900 and $875).  Thus the cost to process the part will be $1.00 - 5 * $0.01 = $0.95 at $875.00 gold.
